Andrzej Grabowski’s novel tells the story of ten-year-old Krysia, who lives with her family in the Warsaw neighborhood of Żoliborz. When World War Two starts, Krysia joins the resistance, distributing illegal pamphlets and confidential messages. From this perspective, she discusses life in occupied Warsaw, where childhood games and comforting daily routines prevail despite dire circumstances. One day, a women with her son, Janek, slightly younger than Krysia, moves into the girl’s family home. It is revealed that they are Jews fleeing from Łódź. They hide away in the apartment for several days, but due to the threat of denunciation by a neighbor, Krysia’s mom helps them find safer shelter. The story ends with the outbreak of the Warsaw Uprising, when Krysia’s family is forced to evacuate the city.

War on the Beautiful Riverbank is based on the experiences of Krystyna Grabowska, the author’s mother. From the afterword, the reader learns about the post-war life of the book’s main characters, many of whom died towards the end of the war or soon after. In Grabowski’s text, the Holocaust appears episodically, always seen from Krysia’s perspective. On this subject, apart from the family giving shelter to Polish Jews, the Warsaw Ghetto Uprising in spring 1943 is mentioned.
