This is a memoir by Joanna Papuzi\u0144ska on which her later children\u2019s books such as Asiunia<\/em> (2011), M\u00f3j tato szcz\u0119\u015bciarz<\/em> (My Dad the Lucky Man, 2013) and Krasnale i olbrzymy<\/em> (Dwarfs and Giants, 2015) were based. The author\u2019s recollections trace back to the Second World War. Despite it being a dramatic time, especially for the adult members of her family, the small child\u2019s perspective makes room for humorous moments.<\/p>\n

Only one explicit mention of the Holocaust can be found in The End of the Game<\/em>. When Joanna is a toddler, her mother picks her up, points to a red sky over Warsaw and: \u201cshe said \u2018Remember\u2019 or \u2018Look \u2013 the Germans are burning the ghetto<\/a>.\u2019\u201d [6] What is more, the book contains references to the fact that the Papuzi\u0144skis actively helped Jewish people. There are visitors in need of help who come and go; \u201cvarious aunties\u201d who \u201chave lingered awhile and are staying in the little room at the back of the apartment\u201d and keep \u201cvery quiet, very careful.\u201d [7] Joanna\u2019s grandmother says that it was \u201creckless\u201d on the family\u2019s part to allow them there.
