One day, the Germans decide that the Jews must give up all of their dogs. Micha\u015b cannot accept the order, so his parents find another solution: Czika is going to live with Ms. Hanusia, \u201ca non-Jew who lives outside of the ghetto.\u201d The protagonist\u2019s father walks the dog out of the ghetto and to a country home of a woman who agrees to look after Chika despite her limited food supplies. When transports to concentration camps begin in the ghetto, Micha\u015b\u2019s family retreats to a hideout that they prepared earlier. They survive the war. When the Soviet army enters the city, the family is able to leave the hideout and welcome Chika again.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This short story presents the life of Jews in a ghetto which is depicted as small in size and not fenced-in. It focuses on the relationship between the boy and his pet. At the end of the book, a short glossary can be found (\u201cghetto,\u201d \u201cNazi,\u201d \u201cconcentration camp\u201d).
