DI2015 013145).<\/span><\/h6>\n<h6>The Holocaust in Children&#8217;s and YA Literature<\/h6>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">The project is devoted to the description and interpretation of Polish literature (including its international context) directed at non-adult readers, created in the twentieth century and the early twenty-first century, pertaining to the subject of the Holocaust.\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"s1\">The tragedy of the Holocaust shook European culture. It is remembered as the height of the crisis of humanity and a warning for the future. The problem of the Shoah is discussed in various cultural texts which attempt to give an account of the cataclysm and preserve its remembrance. Therefore, the subject is not foreign to children\u2019s and youth literature, whose task is to shape new generations and build the foundations for their identity, their value system, and cultural awareness.\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"s1\">An increasing number of books which raise questions relevant to this research project appears on the market each year. The titles include <a href=\"https:\/\/oczamidziecka.al.uw.edu.pl\/index.php\/en\/pamietnik-blumki-blumkas-diary\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><i>Pami\u0119tnik Blumki<\/i> [<em>Blumka&#8217;s Diary<\/em>]<\/a> by Iwona Chmielewska (2011), <a href=\"https:\/\/oczamidziecka.al.uw.edu.pl\/index.php\/en\/arka-czasu-czyli-wielka-ucieczka-rafala-od-kiedys-przez-wtedy-do-teraz-i-wstecz-the-ark-of-time-or-rafals-great-escape-from-once-through-then-until-now-and-back\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><i>Arka czasu<\/i> [<em>The Ark of Time<\/em>]<\/a> by Marcin Szczygielski (2013) or\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/oczamidziecka.al.uw.edu.pl\/index.php\/en\/listy-w-butelce-opowiesc-o-irenie-sendlerowej-lists-in-a-bottle-a-story-about-irena-sendler\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><em>Listy w butelce: Opowie\u015b\u0107 o Irenie Sendlerowej<\/em> [<i>Lists in a Bottle: A Story about Irena<\/i> Sendler]<\/a> by Anna Czerwi\u0144ska-Rydel (2018). In addition, some works of foreign authors have been translated into Polish. The ones mentioned in this project include John Boyne\u2019s <i>The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas<\/i> (published in Poland as <i>Ch\u0142opiec w pasiastej pi\u017camie<\/i> in 2007) and Uri Orlev\u2019s <i>Run, Boy, Run<\/i> (published in Poland as <i>Biegnij, ch\u0142opcze, biegnij<\/i> in 2013)<\/span><\/p>\n<h6>Catalog of Holocaust Literature<\/h6>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Due to the increasing number of publications on the subject of the Holocaust targeted at the non-adult reader, the main aim of the project is to become familiarized with existing material and begin its classification. The project\u2019s accompanying Internet platform contains both a <a href=\"https:\/\/oczamidziecka.al.uw.edu.pl\/index.php\/en\/catalog\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">catalog<\/a> of children\u2019s literature and a <a href=\"https:\/\/oczamidziecka.al.uw.edu.pl\/index.php\/en\/bibliography\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">bibliography<\/a> of theoretical texts. It is designed to help schoolteachers and academic teachers select materials to work with schoolchildren and university students. The website may also be useful to librarians and other people interested in books for the young reader.<\/span><\/p>\n<h6>Publication Dedicated to the Holocaust Narratives<\/h6>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">The final results of the research were published in a monograph <a href=\"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.31338\/uw.9788323562818\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em>Obrazowanie Zag\u0142ady. Narracje holokaustowe w polskiej literaturze XXI wieku dla dzieci i m\u0142odzie\u017cy<\/em><\/a> [Imaging the Shoah: Holocaust Narratives in Polish Children\u2019s and Young Adult Literature of the 21st Century] (WUW, Warszawa 2023) intended to consolidate and process the analyzed material, especially with regards to chief narrative strategies used in transmitting information on the Holocaust to the non-adult reader. The publication responds to the significant deficit in research on how the great tragedy from the past can be discussed today.<\/span><\/p>\n<h6>Guide for Schoolteachers, Educators, Librarians, etc.<\/h6>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">The manager of this project hopes that a detailed analysis of children\u2019s and youth literature on the Holocaust will be of use to teachers and educators, particularly ones who specialize in historical education and the subject of the Shoah. Moreover, the research is conducted with a theoretical goal in mind (vital in the perspective of emerging children\u2019s and youth literature studies), which is to further define the specificity of the narratives disseminated by these texts. It can be made evident precisely due to the fact that the subject matter of the analyzed works seems to be inadequate for children\u2019s and youth books, while remaining an integral part of European culture and experience.
